How To Prepare

A few tips to help you get the most from your massage

Getting a massage is one of the best things a human being can do. Not only is it one of the best treatments for stress, anxiety, and pain it also feels amazing and gives us insights into where we are holding tension. When you know what to expect and how to prepare for a massage you will get the full benefit of your session.

Drink water

We recommend drinking plenty of water before and after your massage, especially if it’s been a while since your last session. Massage helps release built-up tension and toxins in the muscles, and staying hydrated supports your body in flushing them out. Since massage can be dehydrating, water is essential to help you feel your best. We also recommend using the restroom before your session — one is right across the hall, and another is two doors down.

What to wear

It is best to wear loose comfortable clothes when you come in for your session. You will be asked to undress to your comfort level for your massage. Wearing loose clothing will make the undressing process easier and more comfortable for you. Feel free to hang your clothes on the hook on the door or on the chair. After the massage, you may feel tender or just extremely relaxed and you will appreciate not having to put on restrictive clothing.

Communication

Please let us know before your session if you have any focus areas, sensitivities, contraindications, allergies, or places to avoid. You can also share if you prefer deeper pressure or a more relaxing or sporty massage. This session is all about you. Feel free to talk or stay quiet — just breathe and stay present with your body. At Massage Grotto, we’re here to hold space for you, support your process, and help you feel your best.

During the session

It is important to completely relaxed when receiving a massage (think Shavasana (corpse) pose in yoga). The relaxation of your body and mind is key to getting the most out of your session. Focus on taking deep slow breaths during the massage. If you find you are holding your breath or tensing up the pressure is too much. I can usually tell if the pressure is too much but you can always say something or tap the table.

What to Expect at Massage Grotto SF

Your body is always speaking to you — sometimes through tension, sometimes through exhaustion. Coming to Massage Grotto SF is a gift you give yourself: a space to listen, release, and return to your center.

Before your session

When you arrive, we’ll welcome you calmly and give you space to share how you’re feeling and what areas of your body need care. You don’t need to have the right words — we’re here to listen and hold space for you with presence and no judgment.

Your body, your rhythm

Your therapist will step out to let you prepare. You may fully undress or keep your underwear — whatever makes you feel safest. You’ll lie face down under a soft sheet. You’ll always be covered, with only the area being worked on exposed at any time.

Let go and drift

Many of our clients relax so deeply they fall asleep — and that’s perfectly okay. A massage is a space to release, disconnect from stress, and let your body begin to restore itself. Breathe, surrender, and allow the experience to carry you.

After your session

Once the massage ends, you’ll have a few quiet minutes to slowly return and get dressed. You may feel deeply relaxed, mentally clear, or emotionally open. We recommend drinking water, moving gently, and giving yourself a peaceful rest of the day.
